If you live along the Wasatch Front here in Utah you’re probably aware of the financial challenges faced by the Jordan School District this year. This morning I attended a fund raiser that was organized by concerned parents and the Jordan Education Foundation, and was sponsored by businesses and individuals throughout the Jordan School District boundaries. The event was a 5K/Fun Run/Walk. It was well attended, and as you can see from the photos below, everyone had a great time.

31st Annual Snowbird Bicycle Hill Climb

Kellie and I drove up to Snowbird this morning to cheer my brother, David, in the Snowbird Bicycle Hill Climb. We met Jennie, Hunter and Kelton at the finish line to wait for and cheer Dave on. The race started at 8 am and is about 10 miles long with a vertical climb up Little Cottonwood Canyon of about 3300 feet. The two fastest racers crossed the finish line in 45 minutes. (See the 2nd photo from the top.) There was a kid who I swear was about 12 years old who finished in the top 10. (Fourth photo from the top.) Amazing. Some of the early finishers rode back down the canyon to accompany friends back up. Crazy. Dave did very well, finishing in about 1 hr 20 min. The weather and scenery were beautiful.

Our family went to a Salt Lake Bees game on Monday night this week. Unfortunately the Bees pitching fell apart in the last 3 innings and they lost 12-3. Ouch. In addition, Nathan was complaining about a tooth ache the whole time and wanted to leave as soon as he got there. Double ouch. (He had two baby teeth pulled the next day – but that’s another story.) The game was actually pretty fun for a while though. The weather was great and it was nice for Kellie and I to be out of the house with the kids.

We sat about halfway between 3rd base and the left field wall. We weren’t very close to the action at home plate so I decided to take out my 70-300mm lens and see what I could do. I thought I’d post a few of the photos and explain my lessons learned:

I was pleasantly surprised that the 70-300mm lens did a pretty good job of getting me closer to the action, and the photos turned out decent even as the light waned. I had to kick up the ISO settings to 1600 eventually and cropped some of the pictures a little since I was so far away.
The color of light changes as the sun goes down and the stadium lights take over. Remember to check your white balance settings!
In a game with a depressing score, taking photos of the crowd can still be fun.
My photos probably would have turned out better if I had taken a monopod along (if I had one of course – donations are welcome.)
